WORKSHOP
Title: What Do They Do at the Water Center?
Date: Tuesday, April 9 | Time: 3:30 - 5:00 PM
Cost: $0.00
Description: As the only agency in the Federal government charged with water prediction and warning responsibilities, NOAA is uniquely positioned to provide the tools, data, and information people need to strengthen America’s water security, reduce vulnerability to water risks, and
catalyze more effective management and use of our valuable water resources. The NWS Office of Water Prediction has been at the forefront of developments and will utilize this workshop to raise awareness, explore opportunities for enhanced applications, and discuss future directions in operational products and services.
- Flood Inundation Mapping (FIM) – New inundation mapping capabilities translate analysis and forecasts of streamflow into operational maps that communicate impact by showing the spatial extent of flooding down to street level before, during and after an event.
- National Water Prediction Service (NWPS) – significantly upgrading the legacy Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service (AHPS) and when launched, will be the one-stop shop for critical NWS water resources information including river observations, forecasts, site data, and data services.
- National Water Model (NWM) & Next Generation Water Resources Modeling Framework (NextGen) – Complementing existing regional products, the NWM system simulates and forecasts the additive impacts of storm surge, tides and freshwater flow, providing guidance on compound flooding for coastal regions that are home to millions of people. The NextGen Framework is a model-agnostic, standards-based, open-source, water resources model interoperability software framework, designed to speed the research to operations pathway in water prediction.
