TECHNICAL TRIPS

The Planning Committee has organized two technical trips at the AWRA 2024 Spring Conference that are incorporated into the conference program. Register now, space is limited! You MUST ADD the trip that you want to attend as a program item to your registration. These trips requires a signed waiver prior to participating. You will need to sign a waiver onsite prior to departing for the trip.

All technical trips require sturdy walking shoes, personal drinking water, and clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

*AWRA reserves the right to cancel technical trips due to unforeseen circumstances. In this case, AWRA will issue a full refund to the form of payment used during registration.

TECHNICAL TRIP #1: USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility

Description: The U.S. Geological Survey is constructing a new Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility, a science and engineering facility that will support its water observing networks and research. The new HIF will be on the University of Alabama's Tuscaloosa campus and will advance the USGS water-resource monitoring and evaluation mission with training and equipment necessary for the comprehensive scientific study of water availability, quality, and quantity. USGS expects the facility will encourage strong collaboration with NOAA’s National Water Center, also located on campus. The two story facility will include a hydraulics lab, water-quality labs, field testing facilities, environmental chambers, sensor innovation space, warehouse, training labs, network operations center and administrative offices. Unique features of the hydraulics lab will include a tilting flume and test basin for simulating river and stream processes, and a 350 foot-long tow tank and carriage which will provide a national water-velocity standard for calibrating field instrumentation. The field trip will provide a walking tour of the new facility and an overview of its planned capabilities and programs.

TECHNICAL TRIP #2: Abandoned Mine Reclamation Efforts

Description: Alabama has a long history of coal mining, resulting in numerous abandoned mines that require reclamation efforts. Restoration of these abandoned mine lands is a federal and state priority, emphasizing the need to determine existing baseline water quality conditions. Join us for an interactive field trip to an abandoned mine land reclamation site in the Hurricane Creek watershed, Tuscaloosa County. This site is central to a collaborative research project involving the Alabama Department of Labor, Cawaco Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc., Trutta Environmental Solutions, the Geological Survey of Alabama, and the University of Alabama. Discover how this project informs abandoned mine land restoration success by incorporating a watershed-wide water quality assessment with site-specific water and sediment geochemistry data. The trip includes field demonstrations, providing insights into the utilization of a High-Definition Stream Survey (HDSS) backpack. This innovative tool continuously mapped water quality conditions across 250 miles of the Hurricane Creek watershed, aiding in prioritizing future management decisions. Visit sampling sites and witness firsthand the impactful efforts toward collaborative comprehensive water quality assessment and mine land restoration.

REGISTRATION NOTE

All conference participants (presenters, moderators, panelists, attendees, etc.) must adhere to the AWRA Code of Conduct and must register at the appropriate registration rate. AWRA Gateway members are not eligible for discounted conference rates. The registration fees are the major source of funding for the Conference, and the sharing of registrations is prohibited - every person attending the conference must register. For presenters, if two or more individuals will be presenting, each individual must register for the conference. This includes: all technical session presenters; all panel session presenters; and all poster session presenters.

Cancelations must be made in writing. Those cancelations received by February 8, 2024 will be subject to a processing fee of 30% of total fees. No refunds will be given after February 8, 2024 but we can transfer your registration to someone else. The transfer must be completed by April 1, 2024. Abstract submission fees are nonrefundable. Refunds will be processed after the conclusion of the conference. Conference location decisions are guided by AWRA's policy.
