MT AWRA Student
Awards and Presentation Opportunities: Training of future water professionals...
Each year at the Montana Section AWRA meeting, students are encouraged to present their research to the water research community. Often, engaging discussions are prompted by these presentations, giving students an opportunity to hone their professional scientific communication skills. A committee of water professionals view all student papers, offering small financial awards to top paper and poster presenters. The student winning the competition will be expected to give that presentation at the National AWRA conference. For more information about this opportunity, contact water@montana.edu. The annual student awardees are acknowledged below.

Montana Student wins National AWRA Award
2001 Richard A. Herbert Scholarship Winner
The American Water Resources Association has selected the recipients
for its 2001-2002 Richard A. Herbert Memorial Educational Scholarships.
Over 30 applications from around the country and overseas, were
considered for receipt of the two $1,000 scholarships (one graduate
and one undergraduate).
Carl J. Legleiter of Colorado Springs, Colorado is the recipient
of the Richard A. Herbert Memorial Educational Scholarship,
Undergraduate Student Category. Enrolled at Montana State University,
Bozeman, Montana, Carl is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Geohydrology
and maintains a 4.0 Grade Point Average. His academic interests
include surface and groundwater resources, western water policy,
stream ecology, statistics and geographic information systems.
He has received numerous honors and awards, among them the prestigious
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Carl has worked on field studies
in Yellowstone National Park and Montana's Paradise Valley.
Earlier this year he won the Water Resources Specialty Group's
Student Paper Award for a paper he presented at the Association
of American Geographers annual meeting. He plans to attend graduate
school then work as a professor, "staying on the forefront
of research and passing on …knowledge to future students,
hopefully inspiring others to seek to understand and protect
America's waterways." |
