As president of AWRA, I have been able to identify and clearly state how much I do not know about water resources, and how skewed my view is to the East Coast. I have noticed that the definition of the riparian zone differs slightly from arid regions to moister, more temperate regions. In the east, riparian zones are defined primarily as the transition between the land and the water of a lake, stream, or tidal area. They are not necessarily considered wetland areas, although they may be. In the arid west, riparian zones are considered to be those damp or wet areas along a river or stream. They are the “green” zones on the watershed landscape, obviously of great value to both humans and wildlife where water is scarce......<read more>.
